Want to leave a lasting impression on your interviewers when you talk about your past experience and projects? Khushboo Manek, a Manufacturing Engineer at BAE industries in Detroit, MI insists that you remember that YOU are the STAR of the interview. While the STAR method is not a new method, below is an example of how Khushboo used her class project example to respond to the question.

All you have to do for this is to carry yourself like a star, act like a star, and additionally, apply the STAR technique when talking about your past experience. This simple yet powerful technique helps you express yourself in a structured and impactful manner.

What is the STAR technique?

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

Situation: Provide an overview of the situation/project you want to talk about.

Task: Explain your role in the project and talk about tasks that you’ve been assigned and how it integrates into the project.

Action: This is the part where you go in detail. Talk about the various technical and leadership skills and all the methods and techniques you applied to resolve the task.

Result: Summarise the results of your action. Make sure you talk about how your action impacted the project.

Below is an example of how Khushboo used her class project example to respond to the question.

You could also apply the same technique to behavioral questions to make sure you do not go off on a tangent during your interview.

So you’ve learned the STAR technique. Now what?

Prepare, Prepare, and Prepare. Conduct mock interviews with your own self, friends, family members, or seniors and soon, you should be ready to ace that interview.
