Preparing a resume can be a daunting task. If you already have a prototype resume ready, and you are looking to refine it to be most effective, here are a few tried and tested tips by Karishma Shah, a tech Product Manager at Microsoft.

Customize your resume for every job.

Research the role that is described in the job requirement thoroughly and then, depending on the skills required, tailor your resume to best fit the job.

Think of your resume as a list of catchy headlines.

Your recruiter probably goes through thousands of resumes. Hence, make your recruiter curious enough to give you a call by specifying your roles and past experiences in a manner that is revealing enough without going too deep into them.

Each statement must end with a clear improvement or impact created by you, preferably represented numerically. E.g. Pioneered Interstate League that ultimately benefitted 140 athletes and 12 partner organizations. (Ref. video for more insights)

Less is more.

Use keywords and highlights to make your skills stand out but if you wish to explain your impact in a previous role, it is best to write about it in a few lines without making it too lengthy.

Emphasize relevant skills for the specified job.

Structure your resume in a way that prioritizes and showcases that the job requires of you.

Understand that your resume is a tool for the recruiter to judge if you fit the role that they are looking to fill. In a manner, it is less about your accomplishments and more about the relevance to the job. Accordingly, structure your resume in a way that prioritizes and showcases the skills that you have, that the job requires of you.

Limit your resume to one page.

Do NOT fake anything on your resume, because there will be consequences in the interview.

There are recruiters who would prefer everything on your resume to be elaborated but, in general, Karishma feels it is best to keep it short.

Lastly, do not fake anything. That should go without saying, and the same goes for the interview.
