TIP Co. — The Story: The How, What, and WHY?

TIP Co. (The Immigrant Project)

Think of it, all of us are immigrants of some sort. Some of us moved cities and towns, some of us moved regions and some of us moved countries. If you have not, your parents most definitely would have — for nothing but a better life. But all of us miss home, whatever that might be — a place, family, friends, and sometimes just the feeling. TIP — The Immigrant Project wants to be that home, where you meet your tribe and realize your truest potential by leveraging effective tools and meaningful connections.

TIP — The Immigrant Project aims to empower immigrant students to find their first professional jobs. Our mission is to work with Tier 2 and 3 cities across the world, especially with students from non-premier colleges to accelerate their job finding journey.

It all started when I (Apoorva Reddy Neelapu) graduated from Carnegie Mellon University — one of the most technical universities in the world, and still had to go through more than a year of unemployment before someone bet on me and I got my first full-time offer. I took all that angst, desperation, anxiety, passion, love, and energy into creating an ecosystem where you can find someone to bet on, someone that can bet on you, and most important you find the strength to bet on yourself.

Along the way, my roommate — Surabhi Tambe became my co-founder and many of my friends and her friends (Bhargavi Doruku, Brahmi Kavuri, Khushboo Manek) got on the core founding team.

Each time we deliver, we try to bring to you a new and creative set of learning experiences that are cutting-edge, rigorous, and simple — not easy, simple. In these sessions, you have the opportunity to learn and interact with expert immigrants in Technology, Business, Public Policy, Non-Profit, Entrepreneurship, Academia, Social Sciences, Arts, and you name it- so you hear their insights, while you have an opportunity to have a voice yourself.

So far, we hosted 16 sessions, reaching 250+ students and the number only is growing by the minute. The Immigrant Project India (TIP India) is working towards creating similar tools and resources for Tier 2 and 3 colleges in India and other emerging countries so they have the same opportunity and equity as some of us with privileges do.

All sessions are currently free and open to anyone, and we hope the coming year we formalize this endeavor by registering the organization.

This is just the beginning. Over the coming months/years, we aim to continue to work towards thinking deeply to create a platform that is simple, powerful, and impactful, so YOU get to your dream at the earliest. While we have much work to do and more fun to have and our greatest and best is yet to come but NOW is a wonderful time to change people’s lives! Ain’t it?

The Medium posts will be filled with short bursts of learnings from our team members, students, and speakers.
