Why ending an interview STRONG is crucial — Lessons from an Immigrant Engineer from AWS
A first impression is the best impression. It is vital that one starts strong when beginning an interview because it is these first few minutes that set the tone for the rest of the time. However, it is critically important to ensure that the spell that you cast doesn’t break until the very end until you’ve exited the room. How do you do that?
Most fail to recognize the importance of the end of an interview. It is too good an opportunity to pass on because it is the one moment where you’re allowed to direct the tone of the conversation by asking sharp, deep, and intelligent questions.
Inspired by TIP’s Job Hacks session by Surabhi Tambe — Cloud Ops Engineer at Amazon Web Services (AWS), ex- Comcast and Cisco also the Co-founder @TIP (The Immigrant Project), we’ve compiled a few tips that will help you ace your interview, by closing the day with confidence.
PREPARE PREPARE PREPARE
If you want to be a better player, you have to prepare, prepare, and prepare some MORE. — Kobe Bryant
It goes without saying. It is important that one especially prepares on how to wrap up/close an interview. Make a list of questions that you can ask your interviewer. Master the art of framing questions in such a manner that it shows that you’ve taken your research a step further.
Few intelligent ways you can frame a question —
I read in the company newsletter that…
Your annual report highlights…
I saw an article in TechCrunch…
Your CEO most recently noted that…
RESEARCH is Underrated.
Read the company’s annual reports, letters from their CEO, newsletters, public statements, e-books, case studies, white papers, etc. to truly understand the company.
The amount of work one puts into pre-interview research is really crucial and EASY to showcase. Information is easily available if one knows what to look for. Surabhi suggests that a good place to start is the company website. Keep yourself updated with the latest company news through Google/Apple/Yahoo News. Read the company’s annual reports, letters from their CEO, newsletters, public statements, e-books, case studies, white papers, etc. to truly understand what the company and the product offerings are about.
ASK SMART QUESTIONS
Asking deep questions not only allows you to decide if you really want to be part of the company, but it also helps you showcase your passion, relentlessness, resilience, dedication, and attention to detail.
Asking interviewers smart questions allows you to understand the company but for YOU to decide if your values align with that of the organization and team. Asking deep questions not only allows you to decide if you really want to be part of the company, but it also helps you showcase your passion, relentlessness, resilience, dedication, and attention to detail. Avoid any questions that you have very little information in, and that you are unsure about. Better to stay silent, than to expose ignorance.
